Why can carbon form so many compounds unlike most other elements?

Carbon has four valence electrons and forms strong covalent bonds with many elements. It can form chains and rings with itself, creating structures of unlimited length and complexity. The variety of functional groups adds further diversity.

What is the difference between an organic and inorganic compound?

Organic compounds contain carbon bonded to hydrogen, with a few exceptions like carbonates. They are associated with living organisms. Inorganic compounds do not contain C-H bonds. This classification is somewhat arbitrary but useful in chemistry.

Why is diamond so hard while graphite is soft if both are pure carbon?
