The Human Eye — Step by Step
- Light enters through the CORNEA and PUPIL. The LENS bends it to focus a sharp, upside-down image on the RETINA at the back.
- MYOPIA (short sight): the eyeball is too long, so distant objects focus IN FRONT of the retina and look blurry. Fixed with a CONCAVE lens.
- HYPERMETROPIA (long sight): the eyeball is too short, so near objects focus BEHIND the retina. Fixed with a CONVEX lens.
Quick Notes — the Exam Crux
- Cornea: the transparent front that does most of the bending of light.
- Iris: the coloured part that controls the size of the pupil.
- Pupil: the adjustable opening that regulates how much light enters.
- Ciliary muscles change the eye lens's focal length — this ability is called accommodation.
- Retina: the light-sensitive screen where a real, inverted image forms; it has rods and cones.
- Myopia (near-sightedness): image forms in front of the retina → corrected with a concave lens.
- Hypermetropia (far-sightedness): image forms behind the retina → corrected with a convex lens.
Remember It (Memory Trick)
Light path: Cornea → Pupil → Lens → Retina. The lens forms a real, inverted, smaller image on the retina and the brain flips it upright. Myopia = near-sighted (image falls short of retina); Hypermetropia = far-sighted.
Real-Life Example
Walking from bright afternoon sun into a dark cinema hall, your pupil widens to let in more light — the iris adjusting the pupil works exactly like a camera's aperture.
