Food Chain & Energy Flow — Step by Step

  1. PRODUCERS: green plants (and grass) capture the Sun’s energy by photosynthesis and make their own food.
  2. PRIMARY CONSUMER: a herbivore like a grasshopper or deer eats the plants, gaining some of that energy.
  3. SECONDARY CONSUMER: a carnivore like a frog or bird eats the herbivore. Energy flows ONE way and lessens at each step.

  • A food chain shows who eats whom and how energy is passed along.
  • Producers (green plants) make food by photosynthesis — the start of every chain.
  • Consumers: herbivores (primary) → carnivores (secondary, tertiary).
  • Decomposers (bacteria, fungi) break down dead matter and recycle nutrients.
  • Energy flows in ONE direction (Sun → producers → consumers) and is lost as heat at each step.
  • Only about 10% of energy transfers to the next level (the 10% law), so higher levels have fewer organisms.

Real-Life Example
