The Human Heart & Blood Flow — Step by Step
- Deoxygenated (blue) blood from the body enters the RIGHT ATRIUM, then the RIGHT VENTRICLE.
- The right ventricle pumps it to the LUNGS, where it picks up oxygen and becomes oxygenated (red) blood.
- Oxygen-rich blood returns to the LEFT ATRIUM → LEFT VENTRICLE, which pumps it powerfully to the whole body. This double loop is "double circulation".
Quick Notes — the Exam Crux
- 4 chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle.
- Right side handles deoxygenated blood; left side handles oxygenated blood.
- Deoxygenated path: body → right atrium → right ventricle → lungs (via pulmonary artery).
- Oxygenated path: lungs → left atrium → left ventricle → whole body (via aorta).
- The left ventricle has the thickest wall because it pumps blood to the entire body.
- Valves stop blood flowing backward; blood crosses the heart twice per cycle (double circulation).
Remember It (Memory Trick)
Four chambers, two sides. Right side carries "blue" deoxygenated blood, left side carries "red" oxygenated blood — "Left is Loaded with oxygen." Blood passes through the heart twice = double circulation.

When you sprint for a bus in the heat, your heart pounds because your muscles are demanding more oxygen — the left side pumps oxygen-rich blood out faster to keep up.
