Plant Cell vs Animal Cell — Step by Step
- An ANIMAL CELL has a flexible cell membrane, jelly-like cytoplasm, and a nucleus that controls the cell.
- A PLANT CELL has all that PLUS a rigid CELL WALL outside the membrane, green CHLOROPLASTS for photosynthesis, and a large central VACUOLE.
- In short: only plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large vacuole. Both have a membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus.
Quick Notes — the Exam Crux
- Both have: cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, ER and ribosomes.
- Plant cell ONLY: cell wall (rigid, cellulose), chloroplasts (photosynthesis), one large central vacuole.
- Animal cell: no cell wall, no chloroplasts, small or no vacuoles, and often centrioles.
- The cell wall gives plant cells a fixed rectangular shape; animal cells are rounder and irregular.
