Electric Current and Potential Difference

  • Electric current I = Q/t where Q is charge in coulombs, t is time
  • Potential difference V = W/Q where W is work done in joules
  • 1 ampere = flow of 1 coulomb per second
  • EMF (electromotive force) is energy provided per unit charge

Ohms Law and Resistance

  • Ohms Law: V = IR where V is voltage, I is current, R is resistance
  • Resistance R = rho * L/A where rho is resistivity, L is length, A is area
  • Resistivity depends on material and temperature
  • Conductors have low resistivity, insulators have high resistivity

Circuit Analysis

  • Series connection: same current through all components, voltages add
  • Parallel connection: same voltage across all components, currents add
  • Total resistance in series: R = R1 + R2 + R3
  • Total resistance in parallel: 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3

Power and Energy

  • Power P = VI = I2R = V2/R in watts
  • Electrical energy E = Pt = VIt in joules
  • Unit of energy: kilowatt-hour (kWh) = 3.6 x 10^6 joules
  • Heat produced in resistor: H = I2Rt (Joules law)
