1905Bloody Sunday & 1905 Revolution. Troops fired on peaceful petitioners in St Petersburg. The unrest forced the Tsar to allow an elected Duma, but real change did not come.
1914World War I strains Russia. Russia’s heavy losses, food shortages and inflation during WWI caused enormous suffering and anger against Tsar Nicholas II.
Feb 1917February Revolution. Strikes and protests in Petrograd forced Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate. A Provisional Government took over, ending centuries of Tsarist rule.
Oct 1917October Revolution. Led by Lenin, the Bolsheviks overthrew the Provisional Government with the slogan “Peace, Land and Bread”, seizing power for the soviets (workers’ councils).
1918Russia exits WWI. The new Bolshevik government signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany, pulling Russia out of the First World War.
1918–1922Civil War. The Bolshevik “Reds” fought the anti-communist “Whites” in a brutal civil war, which the Reds eventually won.
1922Birth of the USSR. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was formed — the world’s first communist state, deeply influencing 20th-century history.
