| 320 CE | Chandragupta I founds the empire. Chandragupta I established the Gupta Empire in the Ganga valley, marrying into the powerful Lichchhavi clan and taking the title Maharajadhiraja. |
| c. 335 CE | Samudragupta expands the empire. Called the “Napoleon of India”, Samudragupta conquered widely across north and south India. His achievements are recorded in the Allahabad Pillar inscription. |
| c. 375 CE | Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya). The empire reached its height. Trade flourished, and the court hosted the “nine gems” including the poet Kalidasa. The Chinese pilgrim Fa-Hien visited during his reign. |
