320 CEChandragupta I founds the empire. Chandragupta I established the Gupta Empire in the Ganga valley, marrying into the powerful Lichchhavi clan and taking the title Maharajadhiraja.
c. 335 CESamudragupta expands the empire. Called the “Napoleon of India”, Samudragupta conquered widely across north and south India. His achievements are recorded in the Allahabad Pillar inscription.
c. 375 CEChandragupta II (Vikramaditya). The empire reached its height. Trade flourished, and the court hosted the “nine gems” including the poet Kalidasa. The Chinese pilgrim Fa-Hien visited during his reign.
c. 499 CEAryabhata and mathematics. The mathematician-astronomer Aryabhata wrote the Aryabhatiya, working with the place-value system, the concept of zero, and the idea that the Earth rotates on its axis.
c. 5th centuryArt, science and medicine. Golden age of Sanskrit literature, temple architecture, the Ajanta cave paintings, and advances in medicine (Sushruta) and metallurgy (the rust-resistant Iron Pillar of Delhi).
c. 460 CEHuna invasions begin. Repeated invasions by the Hunas (White Huns) from Central Asia drained the empire’s resources and weakened central control.
c. 550 CEDecline of the Guptas. Weakened by invasions and the rise of independent regional rulers, the Gupta Empire broke apart, ending the classical age.
