1674Shivaji crowned. Shivaji Maharaj was crowned Chhatrapati at Raigad, founding a Maratha kingdom built on hill-forts, a strong navy and guerrilla warfare against the Mughals.
1680Death of Shivaji. After Shivaji’s death, the Marathas continued resisting Aurangzeb’s long, draining campaigns in the Deccan.
1713Rise of the Peshwas. Balaji Vishwanath became Peshwa (prime minister); under the Peshwas, real power shifted from the Chhatrapati to these able administrators.
1737Maratha power at its peak. Under Peshwa Baji Rao I, the Marathas expanded across central and northern India, raiding up to the gates of Delhi.
1761Third Battle of Panipat. The Marathas suffered a devastating defeat against Ahmad Shah Abdali, halting their northward expansion — though they soon recovered as a confederacy.
1775–1818Anglo-Maratha Wars. Three wars were fought against the British East India Company. The Marathas were the last major Indian power to resist British expansion.
1818End of the empire. The Third Anglo-Maratha War ended in defeat; the Peshwa was pensioned off and most Maratha territory came under British control.
