c. 1760The revolution begins in Britain. New machines and factory production began in Britain, driven by coal, iron and plenty of capital — the start of the modern industrial age.
1764The Spinning Jenny. James Hargreaves’ Spinning Jenny let one worker spin many threads at once, transforming the textile industry.
1769Watt’s steam engine. James Watt’s improved steam engine gave factories a powerful, reliable source of energy that did not depend on rivers or wind.
1780sThe factory system. Work shifted from homes to large factories in growing towns, changing how and where people lived and worked.
1825The railway age. The first public steam railway (Stockton–Darlington) opened, and railways soon spread rapidly, moving goods and people faster than ever.
1800sGrowth of cities & social change. Rapid urbanisation brought new wealth but also crowded cities, child labour and poor working conditions, sparking demands for reform.
1830s–40sSpread across the world. Industrialisation spread to Europe, the USA and beyond, reshaping the global economy — and driving demand for colonies like India as sources of raw material and markets.
