1955Warsaw Pact & a divided Europe. The Soviet-led Warsaw Pact answered NATO. An “Iron Curtain” divided democratic Western from communist Eastern Europe.
1961Berlin Wall & Non-Aligned Movement. The Berlin Wall split the city; meanwhile newly independent nations, led by India’s Nehru, formed the Non-Aligned Movement to stay out of both blocs.
1962Cuban Missile Crisis. The USA and USSR came to the brink of nuclear war over missiles in Cuba — the most dangerous moment of the Cold War.
1969Space Race — Moon landing. The rivalry extended to space; the USA landed the first humans on the Moon, a major Cold War victory.
1989Fall of the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall fell as communist governments across Eastern Europe collapsed, ending the divide.
