Materials Required

  • Fresh flower (hibiscus, rose, or lily)
  • Dissecting needles
  • Scalpel or sharp knife
  • Watch glass or white tile
  • Magnifying lens
  • Forceps
  • Paper
  • White sheet

Theory

Flower consists of four main whorls: sepals (calyx) for protection, petals (corolla) for attraction, stamens (male parts) producing pollen, and carpel (female part) containing ovules. Flower color and scent attract pollinators. Stamens contain anther producing pollen and filament supporting anther. Carpel has stigma, style, and ovary.

Procedure

  1. Place fresh flower on white sheet or tile
  2. Observe external characteristics and arrangement
  3. Carefully remove sepals and count them
  4. Remove petals and count them
  5. Identify stamens and count them
  6. Separate individual stamen and examine anther and filament
  7. Examine pollen grains using magnifying lens
  8. Locate carpel at center of flower
  9. Examine stigma, style, and ovary using needle dissection
  10. Make labeled drawing of flower parts

Observation

Flower has four distinct whorls. Sepals green and protective. Petals large and colored for attraction. Multiple stamens with yellow anther and thin filament. Central carpel with sticky stigma. Pollen grains visible under magnification.

Result

All major flower parts successfully identified and observed. Function of each part understood. Flower anatomy clearly demonstrated.
