Theory
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential (lower solute concentration) to a region of lower water potential (higher solute concentration) across a semi-permeable membrane. Potato cell membrane acts as a semi-permeable membrane. Water moves into the potato cavity, raising the water level in the tube.
Procedure
- Cut a large potato into half and scoop out a cavity in the center, leaving a thick base
- Use a knife to carefully hollow out the center without breaking the walls
- Fill the potato cavity with concentrated salt solution
- Place the potato on a beaker containing distilled water
- Insert a straw or glass tube through the cavity and seal with clay to mark the initial water level
- Keep the setup for 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Observe the water level in the tube at regular intervals (every 10 minutes)
- Record the rise in water level, which indicates water entering the potato due to osmosis
Observation
Initially, the salt solution in the potato cavity is at the marked level on the tube. As time passes, water from the beaker moves into the potato cavity due to osmosis. The water level in the tube rises, indicating water movement into the hypertonic solution inside the potato.
Result
Water enters the potato cavity through osmosis, causing the water level in the tube to rise by [value] cm in [time] minutes, demonstrating that osmosis is the movement of water towards higher solute concentration.
