Materials Required

  • Monocot seeds: rice, wheat, maize
  • Dicot seeds: bean, pea, groundnut
  • Razor blade or knife
  • Needle
  • Watch glass
  • Magnifying lens
  • Water
  • Paper towel

Theory

Monocot seeds have single cotyledon (seed leaf) while dicot seeds have two cotyledons. Monocots have endosperm and monocotyledonous embryo. Dicots have well-developed cotyledons that store food and minimal or absent endosperm. External characteristics like shape and presence of hilum differ between monocots and dicots.

Procedure

  1. Soak monocot and dicot seeds in water for 2-3 hours
  2. Dry seeds on paper towel
  3. Cut seeds longitudinally using razor blade
  4. Observe external features: shape, color, size
  5. Locate embryo and cotyledons using magnifying lens
  6. Count number of cotyledons present
  7. Observe endosperm position and extent
  8. Record observations for each seed type
  9. Compare structures between monocot and dicot seeds

Observation

Monocot seeds: Single cotyledon, abundant endosperm, small embryo. Dicot seeds: Two cotyledons, minimal endosperm, large embryo. Monocots have pointed one end. Dicots have rounded seed structure.

Result

Successfully identified and differentiated monocot and dicot seeds based on structural characteristics. Internal organization clearly shows differences between two seed types.
