Why do transformers require AC and not DC?

DC produces a constant magnetic field. Faraday's law requires changing flux to induce EMF. AC provides continuously changing flux through the coil, enabling induction. With DC, flux is constant and no EMF is induced.

Why is power lost during long-distance transmission and how are losses reduced?

Power loss is proportional to I squared times R (current squared times resistance). Step-up transformers increase voltage, reducing current. Lower current reduces losses dramatically since loss depends on current squared. Step-down transformers restore voltage at the destination.

How do induction cooktops know when a pan is on the surface?

The cooktop creates an alternating magnetic field. When a ferrous metal pan is present, induced currents in the pan change the magnetic field pattern. The cooktop detects this change and activates heating. Without a pan or with non-ferrous cookware, no induction occurs.
