Series vs Parallel Circuits — Step by Step

  1. In a SERIES circuit, bulbs are joined end-to-end in one loop. The same current flows through each.
  2. Problem with series: if ONE bulb breaks, the loop opens and ALL bulbs go off — like old fairy lights.
  3. In a PARALLEL circuit, each bulb is on its own branch. If one breaks, the others stay ON — that’s why homes use parallel wiring!

  • Series circuit: components are joined end-to-end in a single loop; the same current flows through all.
  • In series, if one component breaks, the whole circuit stops.
  • Parallel circuit: components sit on separate branches; each gets the full voltage.
