Newtons First Law

  • Object at rest stays at rest unless external force applied
  • Object in motion stays in motion unless external force applied
  • Describes inertia: property resisting change in motion
  • Inertia increases with mass

Newtons Second Law

  • F = ma where F is force, m is mass, a is acceleration
  • Force causes acceleration proportional to force and inversely proportional to mass
  • Unit of force is newton (N): 1 N = 1 kg m/s^2
  • Force is vector quantity

Newtons Third Law

  • For every action, there is equal and opposite reaction
  • Forces always occur in pairs
  • Action and reaction act on different objects
  • Cannot cancel each other out

Types of Forces

  • Gravitational force: attraction between all objects
  • Friction: resistance to motion between surfaces
  • Normal force: perpendicular force from surface
  • Applied force: force directly applied to object
  • Tension: force through rope or string

  • Inertia: Property of object to resist change in its motion

How does Newtons second law relate force and acceleration?

F = ma shows force is directly proportional to acceleration. Double the force doubles the acceleration. Double the mass halves the acceleration for same force.

Give an example of Newtons third law.

When you jump, you push down on ground (action), ground pushes you up (reaction). When ball hits wall, ball exerts force on wall, wall exerts equal opposite force on ball.
