Q1: Distinguish between acid and base with one property each.

Acid: sour taste, turns blue litmus red, pH < 7, example HCl. Base: bitter taste, turns red litmus blue, pH > 7, example NaOH. Acid + Base → Salt + Water (neutralization).

Q2: Calculate pH of solution with H+ ion concentration 10^-5 mol/L.

pH = -log[H+] = -log(10^-5) = 5. The solution is acidic (pH < 7).

Q3: What is salt? Name three salts and write their chemical formulas.

Salt is ionic compound formed by neutralization of acid and base. Examples: (1) Sodium chloride NaCl, (2) Potassium nitrate KNO3, (3) Calcium sulfate CaSO4.

Q4: Write balanced equation for reaction between HCl and NaOH. Identify type of reaction.

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O. This is neutralization reaction (acid-base reaction). H+ + OH- → H2O. It is also exothermic (heat is released).

Q5: What is meant by pH? Why is pH important for living organisms?

pH is measure of acidity or alkalinity of solution. pH = -log[H+]. Scale 0-14: <7 acidic, 7 neutral, >7 basic. Important because: enzymes work at specific pH, blood pH must be 7.35-7.45 for life, soil pH affects plant growth, stomach needs pH 1.5-3.5 for digestion.
