Why do pushing forces on ice skates require less force on ice than on pavement?

Ice has lower friction than pavement due to a thin layer of water reducing contact. The normal force is the same but friction force is much lower, requiring less applied force to overcome friction and move.

How do hydraulic lifts provide mechanical advantage?

A hydraulic lift uses Pascal's law and area ratios to provide mechanical advantage. A small force on a small piston creates pressure transmitted to a large piston, creating a large force. The force is multiplied by the area ratio.

Why is it easier to tighten a bolt with a long wrench than a short one?

A longer wrench increases the perpendicular distance from the pivot (bolt center) to the applied force, increasing the moment or torque. Greater torque makes it easier to turn the bolt with the same applied force.
