Apt Percentages in Aptitude
Percentage means "per hundred". x% = x/100. To find x% of y: (x/100) × y.
Percentage increase = (Increase/Original) × 100. Percentage decrease = (Decrease/Original) × 100.
If a value increases by x%, to find the original from new value: Original = New / (1 + x/100). If decreased by x%: Original = New / (1 - x/100).
Successive discounts: A 20% discount followed by 10% discount is NOT 30%. Net discount = 100 - [(80/100) × (90/100) × 100] = 28%.
Common shortcuts: 10% of any number = move decimal one place left. 5% = half of 10%. 1% = move decimal two places left.
