1946Constituent Assembly formed. An elected Constituent Assembly was set up to frame India’s constitution. Dr Rajendra Prasad was elected its President.
Dec 1946First session & Objectives Resolution. The Assembly met for the first time; Jawaharlal Nehru moved the Objectives Resolution, setting out the ideals of a sovereign, democratic republic.
1947Drafting Committee under Ambedkar. Dr B.R. Ambedkar was appointed Chairman of the Drafting Committee — he is honoured as the chief architect of the Constitution.
1948–49Debates and revisions. The Assembly debated the draft in detail over nearly three years, borrowing the best ideas from constitutions around the world.
26 Nov 1949Constitution adopted. The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India. This day is now celebrated as Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas).
26 Jan 1950Constitution comes into force. The Constitution took effect, making India a sovereign democratic republic. The date honours the 1930 “Purna Swaraj” pledge and is celebrated as Republic Day.
