Section A - Reading Comprehension — 10 marks
Read the passage and Answer all 5 questions. Each question carries 2 marks.
Every choice we make at home leaves a mark on the planet. Scientists call the total effect of those choices our carbon footprint — the amount of greenhouse gas released because of the way we travel, eat, shop and use electricity. The encouraging news is that this footprint is not fixed. It shrinks the moment we begin living sustainably.
To live sustainably means to live in a way that does not use up natural resources faster than the earth can replace them — a way of living that could continue indefinitely without harming future generations. It does not demand dramatic sacrifice. It asks for steady, ordinary habits.
Consider the rooftops of many Indian homes today. Solar panels installed there turn free sunlight into electricity, and every unit generated is a unit that did not have to be burned from coal or diesel. Solar power is a clear example of renewable energy — energy drawn from a source that refills itself — and the more we use it, the less we depend on fossil fuels.
There is a great deal an individual can do. Segregate waste and recycle paper, glass and metal. Switch to renewable energy where you can. Close the tap while brushing and repair leaking pipes to conserve water. Refuse single-use plastic bags, bottles and straws, and carry a cloth bag instead. None of these acts is difficult, and none of them is too small to matter.
If a hundred people in a colony make these changes, the saving is no longer small. That is the quiet power of sustainable living: it begins with one household and spreads.
