These properties explain the behavior of solids, liquids, and gases

Q (2022, 3 marks): Explain why gases are highly compressible whereas solids are not.

Answer: Gases are highly compressible because:
1. In gases, particles are far apart with large spaces between them
2. Intermolecular forces are very weak
3. Particles have high kinetic energy and move freely
4. When pressure is applied, particles move closer together, reducing spaces
Solids are not compressible because:
1. Particles are tightly packed with little space between them
2. Intermolecular forces are very strong
3. Particles are in fixed positions
4. Applying pressure cannot reduce spaces further

Q (2023, 2 marks): A 20 g sample of iron (solid) has a density of 7.9 g/cm³. Calculate its volume.

Answer: Using formula: Density = Mass / Volume
Volume = Mass / Density
Volume = 20 g / 7.9 g/cm³
Volume ≈ 2.53 cm³

Q (2021, 2 marks): Why do gases fill the entire volume of the container in which they are kept?

Answer: Gases fill the entire volume because:
