Fractions and Decimals — Previous Year Questions with Solutions
Q (2023, 3 marks): Add: 2/3 + 3/4 + 1/6
Answer: LCM of 3, 4, 6 = 12
2/3 = (2×4)/12 = 8/12
3/4 = (3×3)/12 = 9/12
1/6 = (1×2)/12 = 2/12
Sum = 8/12 + 9/12 + 2/12 = 19/12 = 1 7/12
Q (2022, 2 marks): Multiply: 2/5 × 3/7. Simplify if possible.
Answer: 2/5 × 3/7 = (2×3)/(5×7) = 6/35
This is already in simplest form.
Q (2023, 2 marks): Divide: 3/4 ÷ 2/5
Answer: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 (invert and multiply)
= (3×5)/(4×2) = 15/8 = 1 7/8
Q (2022, 2 marks): Convert 0.75 to a fraction in lowest terms.
Answer: 0.75 = 75/100 = (75÷25)/(100÷25) = 3/4
Q (2023, 3 marks): A ribbon is 5 1/2 meters long. If it is cut into pieces of 1/4 meter each, how many pieces can be cut?
Answer: Length of ribbon = 5 1/2 = 11/2 meters
Length of each piece = 1/4 meter
Number of pieces = (11/2) ÷ (1/4)
= (11/2) × (4/1)
= 44/2
= 22 pieces
Q (2022, 3 marks): Add: 3.5 + 2.75 + 1.25 and verify with fraction form.
Answer: Decimal form: 3.5 + 2.75 + 1.25 = 7.5
Fraction form:
3.5 = 7/2; 2.75 = 11/4; 1.25 = 5/4
7/2 + 11/4 + 5/4 = 14/4 + 11/4 + 5/4 = 30/4 = 7.5
Both forms give 7.5.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I divide fractions?
To divide fractions, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (inverse) of the second. For example, (2/3) ÷ (4/5) = (2/3) × (5/4) = 10/12 = 5/6.
What is the difference between a decimal and a fraction?
Both represent parts of a whole, but in different forms. Fractions use numerator and denominator (3/4), while decimals use base 10 notation (0.75). They can be converted to each other.
