The Idea
Mean, Median, and Mode summarize data in one number.
Mean (Average): - Sum all values and divide by count. - Example: (2, 4, 6, 8) → (2+4+6+8)/4 = 20/4 = 5 - Sensitive to outliers (very high/low values skew it).
Median (Middle): - Sort values; the middle one is the median. - If even count, average the two middle values. - Example: (2, 4, 6, 8) → median = (4+6)/2 = 5 - Robust to outliers.
Mode (Most Frequent): - The value that appears most often. - Example: (2, 4, 4, 6, 8) → mode = 4 - A dataset can have one, many, or no mode.
Which to use: - Mean: For symmetric data without outliers (e.g., test scores in a class). - Median: For skewed data or when outliers exist (e.g., house prices—one mansion skews the mean). - Mode: For categorical data (e.g., "What's the most popular shoe size?").
Worked Example: Find All Three
Problem. Find the mean, median, and mode of: 5, 7, 7, 9, 12
Solution.
Mean: (5 + 7 + 7 + 9 + 12) / 5 = 40 / 5 = 8
Median: Sort (already sorted). Middle value (3rd of 5) = 7
Mode: 7 appears twice; others appear once. Mode = 7
Answer: Mean = 8, Median = 7, Mode = 7
