Theory
Chemical reactions are classified into types: combination reactions join two substances, decomposition reactions break one substance, displacement reactions replace one element, double displacement reactions exchange ions, and redox reactions involve transfer of electrons. Understanding reaction types helps predict products and predict reaction outcomes.
Procedure
- Combination reaction: Heat copper powder in open flame and observe combination with oxygen
- Decomposition reaction: Heat calcium carbonate in test tube and observe release of CO2
- Displacement reaction: Add zinc to dilute HCl and observe hydrogen gas evolution
- Double displacement: Mix solutions of calcium chloride and sodium carbonate and observe precipitate
- Redox reaction: Add copper to silver nitrate solution and observe color change
- Observe temperature changes during each reaction
- Record colors and physical changes
- Write chemical equations for each reaction observed
Observation
Combination: Copper becomes black CuO. Decomposition: Limestone breaks down releasing gas. Displacement: Zinc reacts with acid producing hydrogen gas. Double displacement: White precipitate forms. Redox: Blue color develops.
Result
Five types of chemical reactions successfully demonstrated. Each reaction shows characteristic features and products specific to that type.
