Why Rhymes Come First
Rhymes teach a child to hear that words are made of smaller sounds — that "cat" and "hat" differ by one piece. That awareness, called phonological awareness, is the single strongest predictor of how easily a child later learns to read, and it develops through the ear long before a child recognises a letter. Singing the same rhyme repeatedly is not repetition for its own sake: the child is learning to predict what comes next, which is the beginning of comprehension.

How to Use These at Home
Sing one rhyme a day rather than many at once, and let the child finish the last word of each line — pausing before "star" in "Twinkle, twinkle, little …" makes them listen for the sound rather than recite from memory. Clapping the beat helps a child feel syllables, which is the same skill they will need for spelling. Two or three minutes is a full session at this age.
