Mean: The average of a set of numbers, calculated by adding all numbers and dividing by how many numbers there are.
Explanation
The mean is one of the most common measures of central tendency used to describe a data set. To find the mean, sum all values and divide by the count of values. For example, the mean of 2, 4, 6, 8 is (2+4+6+8)/4 = 5. The mean is useful for summarizing data but can be affected by extreme values called outliers. If one value is much larger or smaller than others, it can skew the mean. In Indian schools, calculating mean is a basic statistical skill taught in Class 7. Mean is used in science, business, and sports for analyzing data.
Example
The test scores are 75, 80, 85, 90, and 95. The mean score is (75+80+85+90+95)/5 = 425/5 = 85.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the mean differ from median?
The mean is the average of all values, while the median is the middle value when arranged in order. They can be different if there are outliers.
Why can mean be misleading?
Extreme outliers can skew the mean significantly. For example, if most people earn 100 rupees but one person earns 1000 rupees, the mean would be misleadingly high.
