Model Answer: Essay on Dignity of Labour

Dignity of labour is the principle that all honest work deserves respect and recognition, regardless of whether it is manual or intellectual. This concept is fundamental to building an equitable and progressive society. Labour is the basis of human civilization. Every building, road, bridge, and public facility exists because of the labour of workers. Every meal we eat is produced by farmers who toil in fields. Every cloth we wear is made by textile workers. Every product we use has the contribution of workers at different stages. Without labour, no society can survive or progress. Historically, labourers and workers have been exploited and treated with disrespect. In feudal and colonial times, workers were forced to work under inhumane conditions for minimal wages. The Industrial Revolution brought further exploitation as workers laboured in factories with long hours and dangerous conditions. The labour movement fought for workers' rights and dignity. Leaders like Ambedkar emphasized that all labour is honorable. The Indian Constitution recognizes the rights and dignity of workers and ensures certain protections. In modern India, we still see prejudices against manual labour. Many people consider physical work inferior to white-collar jobs. A garbage collector is often looked down upon despite performing essential work. A plumber or electrician is considered less respectable than a software engineer, despite both providing valuable services. These prejudices are baseless and harmful. A farmer feeding the nation is as dignified as a doctor. A construction worker building our schools is as respectable as a teacher in those schools. Every profession requires skills and effort. A carpenter demonstrates craftsmanship and intelligence. A tailor uses creativity and precision. All work that benefits society and contributes to the economy has dignity. To promote dignity of labour, society must change its attitudes. We must teach children to respect all workers. We must ensure fair wages and safe working conditions. We must remove discrimination based on occupation. We must celebrate the contributions of workers in building our nation. Mahatma Gandhi promoted the dignity of labour and used the spinning wheel as a symbol of self-reliance. He believed that manual work was noble and should not be avoided by educated people. This philosophy should guide our society. When we respect the dignity of labour, we respect the human being performing the work. We recognize that society is built by everyone working together, regardless of the type of work. A truly developed nation values all labour and all workers. The path to social progress lies in respecting the dignity of all honest work and all people who contribute to society.
