Every week, Indian teenagers spend hundreds of rupees on trendy clothes from fast fashion brands. They buy items, wear them once or twice for Instagram photos, and discard them. While this seems harmless, the environmental and social cost is staggering.
Fast fashion refers to cheap, mass-produced clothing designed to be worn briefly and discarded. Brands like Shein, H&M, and local chains tempt young people with affordable, trendy pieces. However, the production of each piece of clothing consumes thousands of liters of water, produces toxic dyes, and releases carbon emissions.
The textile industry is the second-largest water polluter in the world. To produce one cotton t-shirt requires 2,700 liters of water. In a country like India, already facing water scarcity, this is concerning. Moreover, the factories dump colored wastewater into rivers, affecting the health of communities. The Dye Street of Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu is a stark example of how textile industries have poisoned water sources.
Beyond the environment, fast fashion exploits garment workers, many of whom are women and young girls. They work long hours in unsafe conditions for meager wages. The collapse of the Rana Plaza in Bangladesh in 2013, which killed over 1,000 workers, exposed the dangers of prioritizing profit over safety.
As young Indians, we have the power to change this trend. Instead of chasing fast fashion, support sustainable brands that use eco-friendly materials and ensure fair wages. Thrift shopping, clothing swaps, and maintaining a minimalist wardrobe are alternatives. Every purchase is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.
The true cost of a cheap shirt goes far beyond its price tag. It is time young people became conscious consumers and rejected fast fashion.
