Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a tropical and a temperate climate?

A tropical climate lies near the equator, is hot throughout the year and has little variation in temperature between seasons. A temperate climate lies between the tropics and the polar circles and has clearly distinct seasons with a wide temperature range.

Why is the tropical zone hot all year?

Because the Sun is close to overhead throughout the year there, so sunlight strikes the surface almost vertically and its energy is concentrated on a small area. Nearer the poles the same beam spreads over a larger area and heats it less.

Which type of climate does most of India have?

Most of India lies within the tropical zone, and the Tropic of Cancer passes through the middle of the country. The far north, in the Himalayan region, experiences conditions closer to temperate because altitude lowers the temperature.
