What is the main difference between a river and a glacier?
Both move downhill under gravity, but a river flows as liquid water and moves quickly, while a glacier is a large mass of ice that moves extremely slowly — often only a few centimetres or metres in a day.
How do the valleys they carve differ?
A river cuts a narrow V-shaped valley, because the water erodes fastest along its channel. A glacier carves a broad U-shaped valley with steep sides and a flat floor, because the ice grinds against the sides as well as the base.
How does each carry the material it erodes?
A river sorts its load: heavier stones are dragged along the bed and finer silt is carried in suspension, so deposits end up layered by size. A glacier carries everything frozen together and drops it unsorted when the ice melts, leaving boulders and fine clay mixed in the same deposit, called moraine.
