What is the difference between a primary and a secondary cell?

A primary cell produces electricity through a chemical reaction that cannot be reversed, so once the chemicals are used up the cell is discarded. A secondary cell uses a reversible reaction, so passing current back through it recharges the cell for reuse.

Why can a primary cell not be recharged?
