What is the difference between a primary and a secondary cell?
A primary cell produces electricity through a chemical reaction that cannot be reversed, so once the chemicals are used up the cell is discarded. A secondary cell uses a reversible reaction, so passing current back through it recharges the cell for reuse.
Give an example of each.
A dry cell of the kind used in a torch or a wall clock is a primary cell. A lead-acid battery in a car, and the lithium-ion battery in a mobile phone, are secondary cells.
Why can a primary cell not be recharged?
The chemical change inside it is irreversible — the products cannot be converted back into the original reactants by passing current through. Attempting to recharge one can cause it to leak or burst.
