What is the difference between an echo and reverberation?
An echo is a single reflected sound heard clearly and separately from the original. Reverberation is the persistence of sound caused by many repeated reflections arriving so close together that they merge into a prolonged sound.
Why must a surface be far away to produce an echo?
The ear distinguishes two sounds only if they arrive at least about a tenth of a second apart. Sound travels roughly 344 metres per second in air, so the reflecting surface must be at least about 17 metres away.
How is excessive reverberation reduced in a hall?
