Why does water boil at lower temperature at high altitudes?
At high altitude, atmospheric pressure is lower. Lower pressure means water molecules escape the liquid more easily, so boiling occurs at a lower temperature. At the summit of Mount Everest, water boils at about 70 Celsius instead of 100 Celsius.
What is the difference between evaporation and boiling?
Evaporation is when molecules escape from the liquid surface at any temperature, requiring only surface energy. Boiling is when bubbles of vapor form throughout the liquid at a specific temperature, the boiling point. Boiling is rapid evaporation.
Can a solid go directly to gas without becoming liquid?
Yes, this process is called sublimation. Dry ice (solid CO2) sublimates at room temperature. Mothballs also sublime. Sublimation occurs when the vapor pressure of the solid exceeds atmospheric pressure at the given temperature.
