Vm Urdhva in Vedic Maths

Urdhva Tiryagbhyam ("vertical and crosswise") is the universal multiplication method. For any two numbers, align them and process columns of products in a specific order: ones-place products, cross products with carries, and so on. The beauty is symmetry: you process vertically, then diagonals (criss-cross), then vertically again.

For 23 × 12: write them vertically, then compute 3×2=6 (rightmost), 2×2+3×1=7 (cross), 2×1=2 (leftmost). Result: 276. This method uses the distributive property naturally and requires minimal carrying logic.

Unlike long multiplication (which requires memorizing steps), Urdhva can be visualized as processing product columns. This makes it scalable to any number of digits and is often faster than traditional multiplication for 3+ digit numbers.
