Eng 06 Questions in Spoken English
Question-asking is a superpower: it keeps conversations flowing and shows genuine interest. Many Indians give short answers and go silent. Instead, answer + ask one back. E.g., "How's work?" → "Work is good, busy with a new project. How about you?" This keeps conversations alive.
English question formation has rules: "Do you like coffee?" (auxiliary + subject + verb), not "You like coffee?" or "Why you did not come?" (wrong). Tag questions ("You're coming, aren't you?") are frequent but tricky: the tag flips the auxiliary (am→aren't, have→haven't, did→didn't).
Indirect questions are softer and more polite, especially in professional settings. "Could you tell me where the meeting is?" is better than "Where is the meeting?" Indirect questions don't flip subject-verb: "I wonder if you could help" not "I wonder if could you help." This small change shows respect.
