Git Tags in Git & GitHub

Tags mark specific commits as important milestones, usually releases. Unlike branches, tags don't move. A tag "v1.0.0" always points to the same commit.

Semantic versioning: v1.0.0 means major.minor.patch. Use tags to mark production releases that users download.

When Priya releases the school project, she tags the commit with "v1.0" so students can download exactly that version. Later, "v1.1" marks the next release.

Git Tags — Syntax

git tag <tag-name> # Create lightweight tag
git tag -a <tag-name> -m "message" # Create annotated tag
git tag -l # List tags
git push origin <tag-name> # Push tag to GitHub
