Cyber What Is in Cyber Security
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting digital systems, networks, and information from unauthorized access, theft, damage, and cyber attacks. It encompasses strategies, tools, and practices designed to keep data safe. In an increasingly digital world, cybersecurity is no longer optional—it is essential for every organization, business, and individual. One data breach can cost millions in losses and reputation damage.
Cybersecurity emerged in the 1970s with ARPANET (the predecessor of the internet). Early concerns were academic; the first computer virus (1986) and worms like Morris Worm (1988) showed real threats. The term "cybersecurity" gained prominence in the 1990s with the internet boom. India established CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) in 1999 to handle cyber threats. Modern cybersecurity grew from defending against viruses to protecting complex, interconnected systems.
Cybersecurity evolved through phases: early firewalls (1990s), intrusion detection systems (IDS), data encryption, cloud security, AI-powered threat detection, and zero-trust architecture (2020s). Key milestones: SSL/TLS encryption standardization (1994), adoption of multi-factor authentication (2000s), GDPR compliance requirements (2018), and the rise of ransomware attacks (2010s–2020s). Today, cybersecurity is proactive, not reactive.
Cybersecurity tools include firewalls (Palo Alto, Cisco), encryption (AES, RSA), password managers (Bitwarden, 1Password), VPNs, antivirus software (Windows Defender, Norton), intrusion detection systems (Suricata), SIEM platforms (Splunk, IBM Q
