Cyber Identity Theft in Cyber Security
Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information (name, SSN, passport number, financial data) and uses it fraudulently to open accounts, make purchases, or commit crimes in your name.
Identity thieves use stolen information for credit fraud (opening credit cards), financial fraud (accessing bank accounts), criminal identity theft (committing crimes in your name), and medical fraud.
Prevention includes monitoring credit reports, securing sensitive documents, using strong passwords, shredding personal papers, and avoiding public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities.
If you suspect identity theft, immediately freeze your credit, dispute fraudulent charges, file a police report, and notify affected institutions. Credit freezes prevent thieves from opening new accounts.
