❓ Quick answer

Why is a reflex action faster than a conscious response?

Reflexes use a shorter path through the spinal cord and do not require the brain to process and decide. Conscious responses must go to the brain, be processed, and then a command must return to muscles, taking much longer.

❓ Quick answer

Can you control a reflex action?

Most reflexes are automatic, but some can be partially controlled through conscious effort. For example, you cannot stop your pupil from dilating, but you can consciously hold your hand in a flame for a moment before the pain reflex forces withdrawal.

❓ Quick answer

What happens if your spinal cord is damaged?

Damage below the injury site prevents signals from reaching the brain, causing paralysis. Reflexes at and below the injury site may still work because they do not depend on brain signals, but voluntary control is lost.
