❓ Quick answer

Why do we yawn?

Yawning occurs when the body needs more oxygen or is tired. It forces a deep breath that delivers oxygen to the brain and body. Scientists are still not entirely sure why we yawn, but it may also help maintain alertness.

❓ Quick answer

How much air do your lungs hold?

Adult lungs can hold about 6 liters of air, but during normal breathing, only about 0.5 liters is exchanged with each breath. This is called tidal volume. The rest remains in the lungs called residual volume.

❓ Quick answer

Can you hold your breath indefinitely?

No, you cannot hold your breath indefinitely because carbon dioxide builds up in your blood. This triggers a reflex that forces you to breathe even if you do not want to. The urge to breathe becomes overwhelming after 1 to 2 minutes.
